Courteney Cox revealed that Courteney Cox's longtime partner, singer Johnny McDaid, once broke up with her in a therapy session.
The “Friends” star appeared on the “Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver” podcast, saying it happened about five years ago. At the time, she and the Snow Patrol musician were engaged at the time.
“Then three years later we broke up and it was really intense. We ended up in therapy,” she said. “I didn’t know it was going to happen, whether it was supposed to happen or not.”
They were supposed to be discussing the boundaries of their relationship in therapy, but the musician just broke it off.
“He finished in the first minute. And I was like, what? We were engaged and I was shocked. I was in so much pain,” Courteney said. “He wasn’t trying to surprise me. He was in so much pain in the relationship.”
“There was so much to deal with that he needed to protect himself when it came to his heart.”
The actress said she ended up working on herself during the separation. “I learned to recover my voice, my limits. What were my motives in life? Like, what was my part in this?”
She even called McDaid's decision courageous.
“It takes a lot of courage to end something you have so much passion for or to end anything,” she said.
“Any kind of relationship. It's so much easier to just stay and take it and make excuses and, you know, the fear of pain is just too much to bear. But once you have enough courage to make decisions and go through the pain, you can’t get around it.”
Courteney now says she's thankful that happened, because when the two were reunited as a couple, their relationship improved.
“When we came back, it was a different relationship, but also because it really taught me how I operated in the world,” she said.
“What were the things from my childhood that I needed? Like I was going to be adored by men or things that I didn't know how to let go of to be in a relationship. To not take things personally, my limits,” she said.
“I just delved into myself and had a great therapist.”
Cox and McDaid went public with their relationship in 2013 and were engaged within nine months. At the end of 2015, it was announced that they had called off their engagement. In 2016, they got back together.
