Covid-19: a vial of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine would contain six doses

Vaccination capacities are on the way to increase by 20%. And for good reason. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has just changed its recommendations for the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, indicating in a statement Friday, January 8 that a single vial contained six doses. And not five as was the case until now. Using an additional dose will speed up vaccination campaigns in Europe. However, you will need to use a special syringe.

“The EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) recommended updating the information on Comirnaty’s product to specify that each vial contains six doses of the vaccine,” said the European regulator in a press release. .

Unsuitable standard syringes?

The Amsterdam-based agency authorized on December 21 this vaccine developed by the alliance of the American Pfizer and the German BioNTech, for which the European Commission immediately gave the green light.

To do this, therefore, special syringes must be used, because standard syringes may not be able to extract a sixth dose from a vial, the EMA said.

The announcement comes as the European Union has reached an agreement to acquire 300 million additional doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, doubling the quantity ordered.
