Covid-19 again predominates in the occurrence of respiratory viruses, points out Fiocruz

The virus that causes Covid-19 is again predominant among those causing hospitalizations for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). According to Boletim Infogripe, from Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Sars-CoV-2 is responsible for 41.8% of positive cases for respiratory infections recorded in the last four weeks.

The analysis includes data from the epidemiological week of May 8 to 14, which modified the scenario that, until then, was the prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which accounts for 36.5% of positive tests and is fundamentally restricted to babies and children up to two years old.

It is estimated that 5,500 SARS cases were reported in the week, in all publics.

The bulletin also demonstrates the growth of the metapneumovirus, common in children up to four years of age and similar to RSV.

According to researcher Marcelo Gomes, coordinator of Infogripe, the current scenario reveals an increase in SARS cases in the adult population and demands greater attention in the laboratory network, so that there is adequate identification to know which viruses are most associated with the change in trend. Especially, so that cases of Sars-Cov-2 are not confused with those of influenza A.

“It is important, because we have specific antivirals to treat specific cases associated with the influenza virus, and now, finally, we also have a drug approved for the treatment of Covid-19 cases. And then, this differentiation of which virus is associated is quite important, for us to properly deal with these cases”, says Gomes.

The publication points to signs of growth in the long-term trend for SARS in 18 federation units: Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Amapá, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Roraima, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Tocantins.

In relation to capital cities, this number is higher: the same behavior is observed in 21 of them. Cases of Aracaju, Boa Vista, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Goiânia, João Pessoa, Macapá, Maceió, Manaus, Natal, Palmas, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio Branco, Rio de Janeiro, São Luís, São Paulo and Vitória, in addition to the pilot plan and surroundings of Brasília.
