COVID-19: Chaotic Situation In India, The Threshold Of 200,000 Deaths Exceeded

India is suffering, and the eyes of the whole world are on her. The epidemic situation has been degenerating for several weeks now, with an acceleration in recent days. Proof of this is that the human toll is increasingly heavy. On Wednesday April 28, the country crossed the barrier of 200,000 deaths from the coronavirus. The number of victims now stands at 201,187 dead, including 3,293 in the last 24 hours, said the Indian Ministry of Health. An unprecedented daily progression so far. But for many experts, the health situation is much worse and the real human toll, much more severe.

India has recorded a total of 18 million infections, with 360,000 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours. Nearly six million new cases were added in this month of April alone. The explosion in the number of cases, attributed in particular to a variant of the virus and to large-scale political and religious rallies, has overwhelmed hospitals, which are sorely lacking in beds, medicines and oxygen.

Soon 600 million more people vaccinated?

The crisis is particularly severe in New Delhi, where breathless people are dying at the gates of crowded hospitals. India is the fourth most bereaved country (behind the United States, Brazil and Mexico).

The country has so far administered 150 million vaccines and, from Saturday, the program will be extended to all adults, meaning an additional 600 million people will be able to benefit from it. However, many states are reporting that their vaccine stocks are insufficient and experts are calling on the government to prioritize vulnerable groups and worst-affected areas.
