With the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe, several countries returned to record increases in the numbers of daily deaths. Russia, Poland and Ukraine are three of the five countries with the highest rates on the continent.
This contributed to Eastern Europe surpassing the mark of 1 million deaths from the disease while Russia surpassed Brazil in the number of deaths, according to a count made by the agency Reuters, behind only the United States.
Currently, Eastern European countries are responsible for more than half of deaths on the European continent. Covid-19 cases caused by the Ômicron variant are relatively less frequent compared to Western Europe, where daily records broke records.
Poland recorded 794 deaths on Wednesday (29), a record for the fourth wave of the pandemic, but the number may have been inflated by a possible delay in Christmas-time records.
According to >Michal Sutkowski, spokesman for the College of Family Physicians in Poland, the increase in the death toll in the country can be attributed to an overloaded health system and the resistance of the population of Eastern Europe to be vaccinated against Covid-19 .
Russia recorded, according to Russian statistics service Rosstat, 87,527 deaths in November, the deadliest month in the country since the start of the pandemic.
The total number of deaths in Russia from the pandemic reached 658,634 people, according to Reuters calculations based on data from Rosstat through the end of November and figures from the coronavirus task force for December, surpassing Brazil, which records a total of 618,800 deaths up to the moment.
According to the Russian Health Minister, Mikhail Murashko, almost 55% of the population was vaccinated with at least one dose of the immunizer.
The current concern of Russia’s head of state consumer surveillance, Anna Popova, is the potential impact of 10 days of New Year holidays.
“Considering the upcoming New Year holidays, when the number of contacts between people is already increasing, the risks of dissemination of the new strain Ômicron will certainly increase,” she said on Tuesday (28).
