Covid-19: French people arrested in a brothel in Spain

The travel restrictions put in place due to the Covid-19 epidemic will therefore not have been sufficient. Nineteen French people were arrested by the Spanish police in a hotel transformed into a brothel located in Capmany, not far from La Jonquera, less than 20 kilometers from Perthus, a town located on the border between France and Spain, reports the Dispatch from the Midi. In total, 39 clients and 21 young women were arrested by the police during this intervention.

It was around 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, January 30, that the national police and the Mossos d’Esquadra intervened on the spot, underlines France Bleu. On the first floor, in a restaurant, a group of customers was with two prostitutes. Authorities then knocked on the door of each room. The prostitutes who were there were given individual interviews to find out if they were not victims of sexual exploitation. All customers have been fined and should receive fines ranging from 100 to 3000 euros at their homes. The managers will also be prosecuted for non-compliance with the regulations in force in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic.

In Catalonia, where the town of Capmany is located, prostitution is legal. But, brothels are not considered essential establishments. They therefore have no right to open their doors since August 21, 2020. As France 3 notes, for cross-border workers, the situation can sometimes be difficult to understand. In fact, the authorizations and prohibitions differ from one autonomous community to another but also according to the size of certain towns.
