“Covid-19 is serious regardless of the variant”, says cardiologist

The increase in the number of hospitalizations due to Covid-19 cases has been worrying doctors since the emergence of the Ômicron variant in Brazil. THE CNN, cardiologist and intensivist Ludhmila Hajjar spoke, this Sunday (23), about the importance of staying alert in relation to care for the disease, especially for the next few weeks, when the country is still experiencing an outbreak of transmissions.

“Everyone thought it was a lighter variant, but we are seeing a variant that is widespread in Brazil, we have testing problems, we imagine that the number is 3, 4, 5 times greater. For the past five weeks, we have been hospitalizing a lot of patients with behaviors similar to the previous variants”, warned the doctor.

Ludhmila Hajjr pointed out that the Ômicron variant may not be as mild as announced after the strain appeared, and that mass vaccination is the most effective way to achieve herd immunity in the population.

“We will have overload on health systems. The onset of the disease seemed to be something mild, something like the flu, but what we’re seeing is that Covid-19 is serious regardless of the variant. Vaccinated people, who have two or three doses, are less likely to be hospitalized,” he said.
