Covid-19 is still a global emergency and demands attention, assesses infectologist

The World Health Organization (WHO) decided on Monday (30) that Covid-19 remains a public health emergency of international concern.

In the evaluation of infectologist Marcelo Otsuka, the WHO’s position is right for a series of factors.

“We have to think that not all countries have the conditions to adequately fight the disease, or even access to medicines, Brazil itself does not have it, for example”, he explained.

According to Otsuka, “more than 100 people die from Covid a day, you can’t think that it’s over, we have to be careful and pay attention to the disease.”

He admits that the situation, with the vaccine, “has improved a lot”, but there are countries that do not even have access to it.

At the same time, the infectologist believes that the bivalent vaccine is an important weapon against Covid-19.

He recalls that the worldwide proposal is that it be used as a booster dose.

“Like the flu, the virus constantly mutates, and protection is not lasting, even that of natural infection, there are people who caught it more than 5 times.”

In this way, “updating the vaccine is always fundamental, to keep up with mutations.”

For the specialist, the Ministry of Health “fooled” in not having acquired the bivalent doses last year.

“We have few doses and that makes it select who will take it, when the ideal is that everyone would take it.”

The bivalent vaccination campaign will start in February, on the 27th.

According to the Ministry of Health, the first phase will be aimed at people over 70 years old, immunocompromised and also indigenous people.
