Covid-19 kills 26 times more unvaccinated patients in the state of São Paulo

The number of deaths from Covid-19 in unvaccinated patients is 26 times greater than in those immunized with two doses in the state of São Paulo, points out a study by the State Department of Health released this Monday (14).

The initiative analyzed 8,283 deaths recorded by the 645 municipalities in the state in the Sivep-Gripe system between December 5, 2021 and February 26, 2022, when there was prevalence and circulation of the Ômicron variant.

Of this total, 7,942 deaths were considered in the study, since the vaccination field was filled out in the official system.

“The data show the impact of vaccination rates in the state of São Paulo, which today has almost 90% of the eligible population vaccinated with both doses. Even with the circulation of a more transmissible variant, which is the case of Ômicron, the numbers prove that São Paulo made the right choice to bet on science and vaccination as the main measures to face the Covid-19 pandemic”, he highlighted, in a note, the coordinator of the PEI (State Immunization Program), Regiane de Paula.

According to the government of São Paulo, the number of deaths that occurred in the period under analysis, among those who were not vaccinated, was 332 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Among the inhabitants with a two-dose vaccination schedule, the number is 13 deaths per 100,000 people.

The data also show that deaths were 69% higher in those immunized with just one dose – 22 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants – compared to those who had two applications of immunizers.

The analysis considered the population eligible for vaccination in São Paulo, which is around 43.2 million people, and the more than 100 million doses applied throughout the campaign in the state.

Approximately 717 thousand people did not take any dose in SP, according to the government.

This Monday (14), according to the State Data Analysis System (Seade), the state of São Paulo has 5,128,738 accumulated cases of Covid-19 and 166,093 deaths.
