Covid-19: new subvariant of the coronavirus is identified in Mato Grosso

The Mato Grosso Health Department stated this Monday (22) that a new subvariant of the coronavirus had been identified in the state, JN 2.5. According to the Central Laboratory, it is the first record of the subvariant in Brazil.

The folder reports that four patients – all female – tested positive for the new strain and were hospitalized in serious condition. Of these, one died. She had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The other three were medically discharged and, according to the secretariat, are in stable condition and remain in home isolation.

Called JN 2.5, the strain is a variation of Ômicron and, until then, had not been found in Brazil. Countries such as Canada, France, Poland, Spain, the United States, Sweden and the United Kingdom had already detected JN 2.5.

According to the research report, 15 samples positive for Covid-19 were selected and sequenced in the municipalities of Cuiabá (8) and Várzea Grande (7).

“It is not necessary to create panic, but we must always be alert to flu-like symptoms. We advise the use of a mask in case of the flu or cold, in addition to washing your hands with soap and/or cleaning with 70% alcohol”, says the superintendent of Health Surveillance, Alessandra Moraes.

The superintendent adds that “it is also important to look for the nearest health unit so that the doctor can determine the best way to manage the situation. It is also essential to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Only immunization is effective in preventing the disease.”
