Covid, anal swabs in China to test those at risk of positivity

No longer only nasal and pharyngeal: in China the first anal swabs are being tested to test subjects considered to be at high risk of positivity to Covid-19. According to the state television CCTV, last week Beijing health officials performed anal swabs on neighborhood residents with confirmed cases of Covid-19, including those within designated quarantine facilities.

Small localized outbreaks in recent weeks have led to more northern Chinese cities isolated from the rest of the country and prompted mass testing campaigns, conducted primarily using throat and nasal swabs.

The method of anal swabs, according to what Li Tongzeng, a doctor of the Youan hospital in Beijing, told CCTV, “can increase the detection rate of infected people»Since traces of the virus persist longer in the anus than in the respiratory tract. However, anal swabs would not have been used as broad spectrum as other methods, as the method “is not considered convenient”, as reported on The Guardian.

With the increase in cases around the world, China has imposed stricter requirements on international arrivals in an effort to keep domestic transmission close to zero. The country has also tightened internal restrictions, with Beijing announcing that people from areas of medium or high risk they will be excluded from the city to reduce the risk of transmission during the lunar new year period. Basically, those arriving in China will have to provide multiple negative test results and remain in quarantine for at least 14 days in designated hotels.
