Covid and flu outbreak again affects São Paulo’s theatrical agenda

the outbreak of Covid-19 once again affected the theatrical schedule in the capital of São Paulo, which saw cancellations and postponements of plays scheduled for this month.

“A Pane”, for example, which had its premiere for January 14, at the Faap theater, was postponed because of positive results for Covid tests on the team.

The same happened with “Chroma Key”, a production that would premiere at Sesc Avenida Paulista on January 21, and “Com os Bolsos Cheios de Pão”, which would occupy Sesc Pompeia’s agenda from last Friday (14).

Other productions were also affected because actors were infected by the coronavirus. “Study Nº1: Death and Life” will now premiere on January 28, while Tuca’s “As Cangaceiras, Guerreiras do Sertão” was moved to January 21. The season of “The Ballet of the Dead God”, which would start at Oficina, was cancelled.

These changes, naturally, affect the sector’s budget and worry producers, technicians, and everyone involved in the shows. They have no choice but to think about possibilities.

This is what cultural producer Alexandre Bussoli did, who bet on the release of the monologue “Prazer, Hamlet”, a piece threatened, like all the others, by the rapid dissemination of the variant Omicron.

On stage, only one actor, Artur Volpi. In the audience, only people vaccinated against Covid watch. The presentation of the vaccination certificate is mandatory.

“One of the challenges of the monologue was working with a low budget, due to the financial difficulties that impacted the cultural sector at this time. Therefore, in addition to having a lean team, I took the opportunity to also try a sustainable planning format, that is, using leftover fabrics and recyclable materials to assemble costumes and sets,” said Bussoli.

“Prazer Hamlet” runs until February 27 at the Giostri Cultural Theater. The proposal of the play is to present three different approaches to Shakespeare’s original work.

The first, through an actor who is preparing to play Hamlet, the second, through the classic character with excerpts and lines from the original text, and the third approach from a new Hamlet, which assumes the role of commentator of the work and reveals the sarcastic side of the story.
