Infectologist Marco Aurélio Sáfadi warned that “we still have Sars-Cov-2, which causes Covid-19, as the protagonist of hospitalizations and deaths” due to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
A CNN Radio he pointed out that the predominance of severe cases of the disease is among the elderly aged 65 to 75 years.
Even so, the specialist points out that “despite the increase in circulation and cases of the virus”, today this is not reflected in the number of victims and hospitalizations.
“The disease has a different behavior and this is due to the effect of the vaccine”, he defended.
Sáfadi brought data from the United States, which started immunization with the bivalent vaccine against Covid-19 a long time ago.
According to him, the updated immunizer allows for a “vigorous immune response” and, among the elderly, allowed 12 times more protection in those who were vaccinated with the compound than those who were not vaccinated.
The infectologist said that the expansion of the public that should receive the bivalent – which, today, is elderly, immunosuppressed, indigenous peoples and quilombolas – will depend on the behavior of Covid-19.
“There is an important need to vaccinate the elderly and immunosuppressed, for example, but expansion to young people and how often will depend on evolution.”
The important thing, according to him, is that the vaccine’s protection data “are unquestionable”.
