The overwhelming growth of Covid-19 cases in China, after the country abruptly suspended its “Covid zero” policy, could lead to the emergence of new, more contagious subvariants of the virus, and also trigger, soon, a new wave of cases in Brazil.
This is what the infectologist João Prats, from Hospital BP, explained in an interview with CNN this Sunday (25).
“The greater the number [de casos], the greater concern for the rest of the world. It has happened that, when something like this happens in China, we see the world suffering some time later too”, he said.
“Let’s see these next 15 to 20 days, and the data that comes from China, and what will happen in our country. Mainly one, two months after an outbreak abroad, we have seen an impact here.”
In this sense, he said that it is especially worrying for Brazil, the fact that coverage of the third dose is still quite outdated in some states, in addition to the risk of the emergence of a new variant, in China, which is more resistant to vaccines.
“The more outbreaks and large numbers of cases, the greater the chance of a new variant (…), and this is always worrying”, he said.
