Covid, she studies as a nurse after the death of her husband: “I want to return the love received”

Study as a nurse for gratitude to hospital staff, who cared for her husband Eric, who died of Covid in April, with attentive and loving care during the seven weeks he spent in intensive care. Rachel Ohene-Adjei, di Cardiff, in Wales, he has already returned to university to prepare for his new job.

Her husband, Eric, 46, had tested positive for Covid in February and was admitted to Cardiff University Hospital of Wales. He and Rachel had met in 2003 in a bar: it was love at first sight. Four years later, the couple married, and had three children: Isaac, 12, Jacob, 9 and Ebony, 8. I went from being a shy girl who walked with her head down to a confident woman, and that’s thanks to him. ”

Rachel and her children often watch old videos and photos of their father, because thinking about happy times helps them remember Eric in a positive way and try to forget the pain of long hospitalization. During which, however, Rachel felt welcomed and protected. “I have nothing but words of praise for every single staff member who has taken on all the time necessary to calm down and to give me the information that I asked for or needed, ”he explained. “They were just fantastic.”

Rachel talked about her work plans to Dr. Nick Stallard, who held her hand as her husband was dying. She explained to him, “I am incredibly grateful for your presence, your sensitivity and all that you and your staff have done for me and Eric. The way you talked to me, the way you held my hand, it meant so much to me and helped me get through my grief. For everything you have done, I have decided to start university and I am taking classes to access the nursing degree program. I would like to give back to the other families what you have done for us ».

Rachel is studying as a nurse to work in intensive care. Dr Stallard, moved, replied that hers was a fantastic decision. “Once you graduate, we will welcome you with open arms. And I’m sure that Eric, if he were here, he’d compliment him for this choice “.
