Covid, the 8 recommendations of pediatricians for vaccinations for children and adolescents

“A global vaccination intervention is needed, at all ages and in all countries of the world”. The Italian Society of Pediatrics says this, explaining that it deems it invalid to limit the vaccination to pediatric patients with previous illnesses. It is not “a valid and effective approach to counter the current pandemic, which rather requires a global vaccination intervention”.

«The timeliness of achieving high vaccination coverage in pediatric bands and adolescents will also allow them to benefit from an upcoming opening of the school year in safety », adds the document of the pediatricians.

Vaccination “will help reduce not only the circulation of the virus itself, but above all the risk of generating potentially more contagious variants”.

Children and teens are not exempt from the Covid. Of the 4.2 million cases in Italy, 638,000 have affected those under 19 with 26 deaths. 5.5%, 231,338 cases, involved children between 0 and 9 years with 11 deaths. In the range between 10 and 19 years, the cases are 9.6%, 406,460, with 15 deaths. In the world, cases up to 19 years are 7% of the total, most of them between 1 and 14 years.

Starting from these data and considerations, the Italian Society of Pediatrics has created eight key recommendations for the proper management of pediatric and adolescent vaccinations:

1) Covid-19 vaccination is recommended for all children and adolescents aged 12 years or older free from contraindications for specific vaccines authorized by age;

2) The use of any Covid-19 vaccine is indicated (provided it is approved by EMA and AIFA), according to the times and methods of administration provided for the specific age groups;

3) The administration of the COVID 19 vaccine can also be done without specific time intervals with respect to the vaccines provided for by the National Vaccine Prevention Plan. It only takes the 15 days that are needed to evaluate any adverse events.

4) For children with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection there is an interval of at least 90 days between diagnosis of infection o the administration of any monoclonal antibodies and the first administration of the Covid-19 vaccine.

5) They must not be prescribed medications aimed at the prevention of any adverse post-vaccination events.

6) Pediatricians must to drive adolescents and their families towards a free and informed vaccination process.

7) It is necessary to inform the parents about how to manage the most frequent post-vaccination signs and symptoms and the timing of contacting your referring physician.

8) We must strongly reiterate to adolescents and their families the value of continuous and constant compliance with the rules for the containment and spread of SARS-CoV-2, even after vaccination and until specific indications are formalized by the Authorities national regulators.
