Crash between planes in Japan: “We didn’t feel any shock when landing, but we saw fire coming from the engines”, says passenger

Japan Airlines Flight 516 passenger Satoshi Yamake, 59, told CNN that everything seemed normal during landing until he saw a fire. The commercial jet had collided with a Japanese Coast Guard plane, in a collision that left five dead (all from the smaller aircraft) and 17 injured at Haneda airport in Tokyo.

“We landed normally, we didn’t feel any shock or anything,” Yamake told CNN at Haneda Airport after being evacuated from the crash.

He said he saw a fire just before the announcement was made to evacuate the plane.

“But then we saw fire coming out of the engines and I thought it was strange. Just as I was wondering why the fire lasted so long, an announcement came saying that we probably hit something on the runway and that we would have to evacuate the plane,” Yake said.

“We felt a little smoke, but the passengers did not panic,” he added.

“I wasn't really scared. Since we already landed, I thought the plane probably wouldn’t explode at this point,” Yake said.

“We would be fine as long as everyone got off the plane in an orderly manner.”
