The city of Lupércio, in the Bauru region, in the interior of São Paulo, has been concerned about the increase in size of an open crater in the rural region of the municipality, on private property. According to the city hall, the erosion is around 300 meters long.
Satellite images show the extent of the crater that advances towards the residential area of the city that has 3,981 inhabitants, according to 2022 data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
According to the municipal executive, the opening began in 2007 and grew over the years. It is currently 25 meters wide and 15 meters deep.
In a note to CNN , the city council stated that work to solve the problem is estimated at R$3 million. However, still in the note, the municipality said it recognizes that it does not have “the financial capacity to cover this expense without compromising other vital sectors”.
The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo informed the CNN which maintains conversations with Lupércio city hall and is available to the municipality to “seek joint solutions to the problem”. The organization highlighted its commitment to promoting the well-being of the community and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
