Crimean government says there is now a land corridor to Donbass

The deputy prime minister of the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula said today that there was a land corridor connecting the peninsula with the pro-Russian separatist region of Donbass in eastern Ukraine.

According to the Russian news agency RIA, Giorgi Muradov said that the Russian forces occupied a road leading from the Crimea to Mariupol.

There has been no confirmation or refutation from the Ukrainian government so far.

According to Muradov, this will allow humanitarian aid to be sent to residents of the Danieck region.

Kyiv accuses Russian troops of blocking the passage of a convoy of humanitarian aid to the besieged port of Mariupol in Danieck.

Several analysts have speculated that one of the main goals of the Russian offensive in Ukraine is to create a land corridor from the separatist regions bordering Russia to the Crimean peninsula.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
