Criminal Police Inspector Henry dos Santos Oliveira, aged 51, was killed in Santa Cruz, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, on Thursday night (19), after witnessing a robbery at a liquor store, and confusing the criminals’ weapons with the well-known “gel guns”, a toy that has become popular in several Brazilian capitals in recent weeks.
In a video from the monitoring system, it is possible to see that the robbery took place inside the liquor store, and when the police officer arrives, he is approached by one of the robbers. See below.
The criminals are characterized as traffic agents from Rio City Hall, which, initially, does not raise suspicions.
Henry has the mistaken perception that the weapons used by the young people were toys, the famous “gel guns”. At that moment, other robbers approach and the agent introduces himself as a police officer.
He is shot by the criminals, who then flee. The inspector died instantly.
On its Instagram page, the HD beverage warehouse, lamented what happened and published a tribute to the police officer.
“We are saddened by this irreparable loss and offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of this hero, who dedicated his life to the safety of society. In respect and mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who shares this pain”, says the statement.
In a statement, the Civil Police stated that the case is being investigated by the Capital Homicide Police Station, and that efforts are being made to find new evidence and witnesses to what happened.
In the incident, another person was injured, but not seriously.
The Rio de Janeiro Penitentiary Administration Secretariat sent a note lamenting the inspector’s death and added that the department will continue to monitor the investigations.
