The Battalion of Special Police Operations (Bope) arrested, this Wednesday morning (5), 16 criminals in Complexo da Maré, North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The group invaded a municipal school in the Nova Holanda favela to escape an operation carried out by police in the region, but the members were cornered and surrendered.
The Police also seized three rifles, four pistols, nine grenades, five radio communicators and about three kilos of marijuana. The action was taken to verify the whereabouts and capture traffickers from other states who would be hiding in the region. The fact happened around 6:30 am, before the students arrived for classes.
The Municipal Secretary of Education reported that 21 schools had face-to-face classes suspended today at Complexo da Maré, following the protocol of the municipal network “Acesso Mais Seguro”.
“No place matches violence, especially school. School is a sacred place. School cannot be an escape route, a bandit’s hiding place, a shooting scene, attack or any form of violence. Education and violence do not mix. School is a place of peace, welcome and learning”, said the municipal secretary of education, Renan Ferreirinha.
The Secretary of State for Education said that the two units of the state education network in the region also had their classes suspended.
Occupation
According to the Police, the heads of the local faction would have given orders for residents of the region to go to the school to prevent the removal of criminals from the space. There was confusion and, according to the Police, armored vehicles had to enter the grounds of the school to remove the prisoners. The occurrence happened around 6:30 am, before the students arrived for classes.
“In recent years, Justice determined that, during operations, the Police avoided the perimeter of schools and day care centers, as well as prohibited the use of any educational area as an operational base for the Police, including areas of entrance and exit of these educational establishments. The math is very simple: every space left by the Police will be occupied by organized crime. Therefore, any restriction on police action is harmful to society”, commented the delegate and coordinator of the Coordination of Special Resources (CORE), Fabrício Oliveira.
CNN Brasil contacted the Rio Court of Justice, responsible for the decision, in 2020, through the 1st Childhood and Youth Court of Rio. On that occasion, the TJRJ responded to a request from the Rio Public Defender’s Office. The bodies have not yet commented on the matter.
