Security cameras recorded an intense exchange of aggression between criminals, military police and motorcyclists at a gas station in the South Zone of São Paulo.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday (30), when two armed men entered the gas station’s convenience store with the intention of carrying out a robbery. One of them was holding a fake gun and forced customers and employees to duck, while the other bandit collected money from the cash register.
At that moment, three military police officers who were patrolling the neighborhood arrived at the scene. One of the officers chased one of the robbers, who tried to take refuge in the back of the store. Another officer got into a physical fight with a second suspect, while a colleague armed with a rifle also tried to restrain him.
Despite initial attempts, the criminals resisted arrest. One of them even tried to apply a chokehold to one of the police officers. Some motorcyclists who were in the establishment also joined the fight, hitting one of the bandits with their helmets.
Arrest of suspects
After about three minutes of intense exchange of aggression, the police managed to subdue and arrest the two robbers who were inside the store. A third man, who was outside to support his accomplices, was also detained.
The three suspects, aged between 33 and 36, were charged with robbery. Alan Fernandes, a public safety specialist, praised the police officers’ actions, but stressed that more verbalization during the incident could have avoided physical contact and reduced the risks for everyone involved.
“The only caveat I would make is that the police officers could be more verbal when responding to the incident. If they were to stand at an appropriate distance and say ‘lie down’ or ‘walk towards me with your hands so I can see you’ or ‘turn to the wall’, this would avoid physical contact in a way that would not put the people present in the establishment, the police officers or the suspects at risk,” he said.
