Scammers created a fake crowdfunding on social media to profit from the case of Maria Flor Dantas, aged 6, who died of a rare cancer in September this year. Criminals use photos of the girl and videos of the mother to give credibility to their requests.
The child’s family had their social media accounts blocked because the scammers created fake pages with fraudulent collections using photos of the girl. As stated in the police report registered by Maria’s mother, Juliana Dantas Costa Oliveira, the fake account was discovered by the family last Tuesday (5).
Maria Flor’s father, Stanley Douglas, said that, in addition to suffering the loss of his daughter after 2 years of fighting cancer, he now needs to deal with scammers using photos of the child. Parents were warned by friends, who reported the fake pages.
“We are still experiencing our grief. Maria Flor was a very intense child. She bravely fought cancer for 2 years and seeing her photos on social media, through scammers trying to get along is surreal and indescribable”, he reported.
Maria’s mother’s Instagram and Facebook pages were blocked, which made it difficult for the family to report the scammers.
Fight against cancer
In 2022, Maria Flor was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), this is a rare tumor, which in most cases affects children between 4 and 6 years old, but can occur in adults.
The disease has an aggressive behavior, rapid growth and poor prognosis, with a median survival of one year.
Also according to Stanley, Maria Flor underwent treatment in Miami, in the United States. Families of children recently diagnosed with the same disease in the country contacted Juliana through the channel to create a support and study network on diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma.
“In total, we have already managed to help 44 families through my wife’s Instagram, which had a lot of content”, he concluded.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro informed in a note that the case was registered at the 82nd Police Station of Maricá and the investigation is underway to identify the perpetrator of the crime.
