Criminals take the bus and barricade them in Engenho Novo, Rio

Two buses were taken over by criminals and used as barricades to prevent police action in the Engenho Novo neighborhood, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. The action took place in the early afternoon of this Wednesday (15).

The vehicles circulated on lines 638 (Marechal Hermes x Praça Saens Peña) and 353 (Gardênia Azul x Terminal Gentileza).

In a statement, the Military Police stated that agents from the Pacifying Police Coordination (CPP), “prevented an attempt to obstruct Rua Álvaro, in Engenho Novo”.

The PM reports that suspects stole the key from a bus and abandoned it on the road to try to stop the agents from advancing.

“When the teams arrived, the suspects fled into the area. In order to free up vehicle traffic in the region, the police pushed the bus to a recess in the road, preserving the vehicle’s safety until it was removed by the bus company’s employees”, adds the PM.

According to the Military Police, there was no confrontation and no injuries.

Although the PM spoke of a collective taken over by criminals, Rio Ônibus – union of companies in the municipality – stated that there were two vehicles.

According to Rio Ônibus, this case is already the eighth bus hijacking in 2025. Through a note, the entity “reiterates the need for effective actions by the public security authorities in Rio de Janeiro”. “It is urgently necessary to guarantee citizens’ right to come and go.”
