Brazilian diplomats doubt that the most recent events will interrupt dialogue between Venezuela and Guyana and provoke a new escalation in tension between the two countries over the Essequibo region.
Itamaraty sources emphasize that the two countries committed publicly and in writing not to use force in the last meeting held between presidents Nicolas Maduro and Irfaan Ali.
Brazil, however, did not welcome the United Kingdom's move, which announced the sending of a military ship to Guyana. One of the biggest concerns of Brazilian diplomacy is the presence of foreign troops in the Amazon.
Brazilian discomfort was made clear in a statement released by Itamaraty. “The Brazilian government believes that military demonstrations of support for any party should be avoided, so that the ongoing dialogue process can produce results”, says the note.
