Crisis In Haiti: The Government Has Resigned

The government in Haiti tendered its resignation on Wednesday and a new prime minister has been appointed. The new head of the Haitian government, Claude Joseph, is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to President Jovenel Moïse, this change aims to tackle the acute problem of insecurity in the country in crisis. “The resignation of the government, which I accepted, will make it possible to address the glaring problem of insecurity and continue discussions with a view to reaching the consensus necessary for the political and institutional stability of our country”, declared the head of ‘State on Twitter.

Claude Joseph replaces Prime Minister Joseph Jouthe, who is also the president of the Superior Council of the National Police and who has proved unable, in a little over a year at the head of the government, to cope with this resurgence of insecurity. Haiti, a Caribbean country and the poorest nation on the American continent, is plagued by insecurity, including kidnappings for ransom carried out by gangs enjoying virtual impunity. Jovenel Moïse, the object of a strong wave of protest from the political opposition and a large part of the Haitian population, is in his sixth prime minister appointed in four years of governance.

The scourge of kidnappings of religious

Latest emblematic example of the drift of the country: the kidnapping, Sunday, April 11, of ten people, including seven religious (five Haitians and two French), near Port-au-Prince. The Haitian Catholic Church denounced, on Monday, the inaction of the authorities after these facts. The seven religious are still in the hands of their captors. President Jovenel Moïse believes that his mandate will end on February 7, 2022, while, for the opposition and part of civil society, it ended on February 7, 2021. This disagreement is due to the fact that Mr. Moïse was elected after a poll canceled for fraud, then re-elected a year later.
