Crisis in Ukraine: What Russia is looking for – Syrigos does not see war

“Clausewicz said that diplomacy is the continuation of the war by other means. Here we have the exact opposite: We have the threat of war, the diffusion of the threat of war in order to strengthen the diplomatic means of each side. It’s a very tough game. That is, you threaten to attack, you create all the conditions to attack in order to strengthen your diplomatic position».

The above was emphasized, among others, by the professor of International Relations, Angelos Syrigos, speaking to SKLAI about the Ukrainian crisis.

“The big loser at the moment is Ukraine“whose economy has collapsed”, he noted and continued: “My assessment is that at the moment things, although the impression is created that they are going to war, they are not going to war. It’s a very tough practice, it shows how they are played on a large scale, how big players play. We see that Russia has raised its voice too high to stop what it considers Western expansion to its detriment.

We see that America and England in recent days, without anything obvious, are also raising their tones too high to gain diplomatic support and enter the battle of diplomacy.

I think that Russia seeks to strike a new balance with the West in relation to what it took for granted until 1997 and lost. That is, that a number of countries have joined NATO that are on its perimeter.

I think we will move more to the logic of the American response, which said, “Let’s find new ways to communicate.” You do not want to have missiles on your perimeter, you do not want to have a threat near your borders. “We will make a new agreement, such as the open skies, to oversee what is happening, and rockets will not be very close to either side.”
