Former Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner testifies this Wednesday (14) in the trial of the attempted murder against her on September 1, 2022, in front of her apartment, in the Recoleta neighborhood, in the city of Buenos Aires, in which Brazilian Fernando Sabag Montiel, his girlfriend, Brenda Uliarte, and Gabriel Carrizo are accused.
The case, which was brought to trial on June 12, 2023, has three defendants: Sabag Montiel and Uliarte, accused of being “co-authors of attempted murder doubly qualified by treason and premeditated participation of two or more people, aggravated by the use of firearms”, as stated in the formal indictment, and Carrizo, a third detainee, identified as a secondary participant.
During the first hearing of the trial held on June 26, Sabag Montiel admitted his intention to assassinate the former president and clarified the role of his girlfriend, Uliarte, in the assassination attempt. “I wanted to kill her and she (Uliarte) wanted her to die, she wanted to be more of a spectator of the moment than a participant,” the defendant declared.
In the second hearing of the trial, held on July 3, Uliarte began to testify, but after some questioning the court requested the suspension of the testimony.
THE CNN contacted Brenda Uliarte’s lawyer, Alejandro Cipolla, who detailed what happened at the hearing. The defense said that Brenda was “erratic” during her testimony and that “she was not located in time and space, which is why the court decided to suspend the testimony.” “Brenda is currently receiving psychiatric treatment from the prison service and there is difficulty in communicating with her,” explains Cipolla.
When asked about how his client responded to the accusations made by the courts, Cipolla recalls that the accused denied her involvement in the incident. “The first few times I went to see her, she told me she had nothing to do with it,” adds the lawyer.
That same day, Carrizo broke down while giving his statement and apologized to the former president. During his statement, he denied being involved in the assassination attempt against the former president. “You talk online about whoever you want, but I didn’t think I would end up involved in this,” he said.
Now it is Cristina Kirchner’s turn. The former president is demanding that the alleged mastermind behind her assassination attempt be investigated. “It is clear that we have a trial against the person who was responsible for what was seen on television, that is, the attacker, and the people who surrounded him; but we are still confused about what motivated him and who financed him,” one of the former president’s lawyers, José Manuel Ubeira, told Radio Continental.
In this sense, it was the former president herself who referred to the deepening of this line of investigation during her arguments in another trial held for illicit association and fraud against the State, for which she was sentenced to six years in prison. However, as the sentence is not yet final, the former president remains free.
“It is very clear to me that no one can think that that gang planned and idealized the intellectual authorship of what they did to me,” said Kirchner.
THE CNN is trying to contact Kirchner’s lawyer to find out more details about Wednesday’s testimony.
