Critical flaw in next-generation Foveon sensor design forced Sigma to start over

Sigma has posted a video of the CEO’s message addressing the challenges of developing the Foveon X3 full-frame sensor. It says that the development, which was announced in February 2020, has not been successful.

The sensor created by the company’s specialists could not be transferred to mass production due to a critical flaw. Moreover, the contract with the sensor manufacturer that was the development partner has been terminated.

The company concluded that it needed to start over from scratch in order for the final product to “meet the high standards of Sigma’s customers”. The specifications are currently being revised to “ensure that it can meet the expectations of this project.”

As a reminder, Sigma acquired the developer of Foveon image sensors in 2008.
