It’s been a few hours since Russia’s ultimatum to Ukraine for surrender of the besieged city of Mariupolwhere 300,000 people are believed to be trapped with minimal supplies.
What did Russia say?
According to the BBC, the Russian army gave the Ukrainian authorities an ultimatum to announce the surrender of Mariupol until 5:00 am (Moscow time) on Monday. At the same time, he promised that in return he would allow the creation of two humanitarian corridors in order to remove civilians from the city.
How did Ukraine respond?
Ukraine rejected the ultimatum. “There can be no talk of any surrender, of the surrender of arms,” said Irina Verestsuk, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister.
Speaking to the BBC, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, he commented that the Russian promises are not credible and that they will defend the city until the last soldier.
What can happen now?
