The long awaited movie “The Ghosts Still Have Fun” from the director Tim Burton 66, hit theaters this Thursday (5). The film is a sequel to the classic “Beetlejuice” released in 1988, and brings back stars who were present in the original work, as well as new names for the cast. Among specialized critics, some say that this is the director’s best feature film in years.
The new story will show the return of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) to the house where her family was haunted in the original plot after a tragic event involving one of her loved ones. Accompanying her will be her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who will be responsible for finding a model of the city, built by the ghost couple in the 1988 story.
Astrid will question her mother about past events, while meeting a mysterious young man from the city. In contrast, dark events will lead Lydia to summon the ghost Beetlejuice again.
With new colors and even more visually rich scenarios of the “afterlife” environment, Tim Burton explores more of stop-motion, an animation technique that consists of taking several photos of inanimate objects to assemble the scenes, in addition to bringing back his classic fantasy, dark and “gothic” style, already seen in both the original production of Beetlejuice, as well as in works such as “Edward Scissorhands” and “Corpse Bride”.
On the Rotten Tomatoes website, responsible for bringing together specialist critics, “Beetlejuice” stands out with a 78% approval rating so far.
G. Allen Johnson of the San Francisco Chronicle called this Tim Burton’s best film in 20 years. “There’s a craftsmanlike, almost childlike quality to it, a sincerity that’s been missing from his recent work,” he wrote in his review.
Matt Zoller Seitz highlighted the practical effects used in the film. “Every streak of hot glue, every irregular dot of latex, and every hand-painted detail is not only visible on screen, but contributes to the feeling that you’re watching something huge and fun, made by humans, not software.”
“This sequel doesn’t move forward or try to reinvent itself. Instead, it’s a cozy reunion more interested in vibes and nostalgia. Keaton hasn’t lost his step, and Burton infuses this sequel with energy,” wrote Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting.
