Critics Choice Awards 2021, Netflix’s triumph (with The Crown, and The Chess Queen)

A hybrid ceremony, where the cold of a half-empty Los Angeles was mitigated by the heat of the digital. THE Critics’ Choice Awards, assigned Sunday evening by Taye Diggs, were consumed halfway between the presence and the remote. Few people, representing the nominated productions, gathered in Los Angeles. Others have connected via computer, so as to allow compliance with anti-Covid regulations. And witness, too, the triumph unleashed by the streaming platforms.

Netflix, the most nominated of the production companies, was able to celebrate its success, that of The Crown, of The Queen of Chess, of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The trial of Chicago 7 e Mank. To Chadwick Boseman, he was able to give one recognition, another, posthumous. To Emma Corrin and Gillian Anderson, to Josh O’Connor, Prince Charles of the last The Crown, corresponded as many statuettes, each motivated by a royal interpretation. Then, he celebrated his Anya Taylor-Joy, queen of an edition which, like the previous Golden Globes, confirmed (also) the overwhelming power of ChloĂ© Zhao.

Nomadland, best film, earned Zhao the award for best director. Then, the one for the best non-original screenplay. The director was applauded and the Critics’ Choice Awards, in the estranging edition of the pandemic first year, came to an end, with no shocks or surprises.
