A little bit Cinderella punk and a little bit Harley Quinn. This is how Emma Stone presents in the first images of The cruel, the new Disney feature film directed by Craig Gillespie che it should be out in theaters in May but that, due to restrictions and the prolonged closure of theaters, could force the Burbank giant to find an alternative solution as it has already done for the live-action of Mulan, Soul and, more recently, Raya and the last dragon, available on the Disney + platform for an additional fee.
Until that moment, the first frames of the film, dedicated to one of the most famous antagonists of cartoons, Crudelia De Mon, Italianization of Cruella De Vil, promise sparks and increase an expectation already born when it was known that it would be the Stone to take the reins of Glenn Close, who had already played Cruella in 1996 and 2000.
Set during the punk rock revolution in seventies London, The cruel rewinds the tape and chooses to tell, as well as in Maleficent, the origin of the character before the events developed in Charge of the 101. This is where we meet Estella, a very intelligent young scammer determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world through her creations. Thanks to the complicity of two thieves who appreciate her natural inclination for nastiness, Estella continues on her way until she catches the attention of the Baronessa von Hellman, an icon of London style, a sort of Miranda Priestly in fur with the face of Oscar winner Emma Thompson.
Their relationship will lead, however, Estella to embrace her evil side and to transform herself into an irrepressible, diabolical and vengeful woman who will transform her, in fact, into Cruella, the nightmare of all the Dalmatian dogs in the city, the unscrupulous designer who, in order to pursue her goal, is willing to make any sacrifice and to pay any price. The film, which returns very dark and Timburtonian atmospheres, is directed by the talented Craig Gillespie, director of Tonya with Margot Robbie, produced by Andrew Gunn (That crazy Friday), Marc Platt (The Return of Mary Poppins) and Kristin Burr (Return to the 100 Acre Wood) and with Emma Stone herself not only as the protagonist, but also as executive producer along with Michelle Wright. Special mention for the creative flair of Jenny Beavan, the Oscar-winning costume designer who created all of Cruella’s outfits throughout the film.
