“Cruises are traps for Covid-19 transmission”, says sanitarista

Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) recommended the temporary suspension of the cruise ship season, after two vessels registered coronavirus outbreaks among travelers.

For Sérgio Zanetta, a public health specialist and professor of Public Health and epidemiology at Centro Universitário São Camilo, the decision should have already been taken by the Agency, as the cruises are “traps for Covid-19 transmission”.

“Apart from the deck, the ship is entirely refrigerated. It is a single air that circulates and, therefore, if there is an infected person, the chance of spreading the virus is very high”, said Zanetta, in an interview to CNN this Saturday (1).

According to the professor, even if proof of vaccination and previous exams are requested, there are some possible flaws, which made the cruise ships turn into traps.

“The problem is someone authorizing the cruise season with the epidemiological picture we have. As long as there is broadcast supported by Covid, this type of event is not recommended”, he stated.

“Holding events outdoors still makes sense, but in confined environments, such as on a ship, it’s totally out of place,” added the sanitarist.
