Cruises that docked in Rio had 110 positive cases for Covid-19

The two cruises that docked in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the year, together, already total 110 passengers who, in tests, were positive for Covid-19. Of the total, 81 were on board the MSC Preziosa, and another 29 on the Costa Fascinoza.

All are in isolation and had their samples collected for laboratory investigation by RT-PCR and may have their samples sent for genetic sequencing by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

The total numbers were determined in a joint action by the Municipal Health Department, the State Health Department and the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). According to authorities, passengers exhibit at most mild symptoms of Covid-19.

The purpose of the sequencing is to find out if they have the Ômicron variant, which has spread and has become prevalent in the country, or if there is any new strain in action.

Given the advance of the worry variant, Anvisa recommended, on December 31, the temporary suspension of the cruise ship season in the country. The Ministry of Health did not follow the recommendation, but on January 3rd, the Brazilian Association of Cruise Ships (CLIA), representative of companies in the sector, decided to voluntarily suspend operations until January 21st.

The statement released by the entity based the decision on “uncertainties in the interpretation and application of previously approved protocols”. On Tuesday (5), a survey produced by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), at the request of CNN, shows that the sector had a loss of around R$ 45 million in the period.

It is projected that the stoppage will affect 15 weekly itineraries for five ships.

The State Procon of Rio de Janeiro notified, on Tuesday (4), MSC Cruzeiros and Costa Cruzeiros, responsible for the two vessels, to provide clarification on the Covid-19 outbreaks in vessels operating off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

Companies will have ten days to respond to inquiries regarding refunds and rescheduling of interrupted or canceled trips.

According to the Municipal Health Department, the positivity rate for Covid-19 is 43% of the tests performed. According to the folder, 98% of cases of the disease in the city are currently caused by the Ômicron variant. In the state, the level is 68%.
