‘Crunches’ in Belgrade-Moscow relations – Zakharova demands consistency in Serbia-friendship

A message to the Serbian political leadership to be more consistent in defending friendly relations with Moscow was sent by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

“We are aware of the pressure on Serbia. We also record Belgrade’s declarations of friendship with Russia. Maybe there is a different perception of friendship. We stand up for friends in difficult times and advocate for all those who call us friends to have the same approach “, said meaningfully Maria Zakharova, broadcast by the Serbian media.

The statement is Moscow’s first reaction to Serbia’s vote in favor of a temporary removal of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. Serbia also voted in favor of the UN and condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Analysts say Zakharova’s statement is a serious warning to prevent a change in Belgrade’s attitude towards Russia. It is noted that Serbia has not imposed sanctions on Russia, but is under strong pressure to align with the foreign policy of the EU of which it wishes to join.

In his recent public statements, President Aleksandar Vuτςiτς, although he states that he considers Russia a friendly country, defends Serbia’s European perspective. In a recent interview with Serbian public television, justifying his support for anti-Russian resolutions at the UN, he stressed that he was not prepared to clash with the West and find Serbia under threat of sanctions.
