Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken will transfer customer data to the IRS

The US federal court allowed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to obtain information about the clients of the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange and its subsidiaries who made transactions with cryptoassets worth more than $ 20,000.

According to a press release from the US Department of Justice, the IRS has received permission to request information about Kraken clients who have conducted cryptocurrency transactions on the platform in the amount of at least $ 20,000. The IRS requires subsidiaries of Kraken and its parent company Payward Ventures in the United States to provide records identifying taxpayers The United States, which “may have violated domestic income laws.”

The IRS wants to get data on US citizens who made transactions on the exchange between 2016 and 2020. According to the statement, Kraken is not charged with wrongdoing and the data is only needed to identify tax evaders.

The IRS recently released a revised version of the taxation guide, which categorizes cryptocurrencies as property with all relevant accompanying federal tax liabilities.

Recall that last month the court granted the IRS request to receive data from the Circle and Poloniex cryptocurrency exchanges of customers who made transactions with cryptoassets worth more than $ 20,000 from 2016 to 2020. Earlier, the Internal Revenue Service of Canada also won a lawsuit over the access to data of clients of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinsquare. The exchange will transfer data to 5-10% of clients
