French financial regulator Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) has registered the Luno cryptocurrency exchange as a Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) in the country.
The official permission to operate the exchange in France will allow the company to provide digital asset custody services to customers, as well as the ability to use the trading platform for buying, selling and exchanging.
“Before registration, we could only offer our services to French clients on the basis of a return request. This meant that potential customers had to approach Luno on their own initiative. Regulatory approval allows us to offer our products and services directly to customers based in France.” Thomas Tudehope, Global Head of Public Policy at Luno, explained.
The Luno exchange was acquired by Digital Currency Group in 2020 and now serves about 9 million customers worldwide, most of which are in Africa. Luno has client offices in London, Singapore, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos and Sydney.
In March, the Luno exchange announced the launch of an investment arm, Luno Expeditions, to support fintech and cryptocurrency startups around the world.
