Once activated, Cthulhu Stealer searches for crypto wallets such as MetaMask, Coinbase, and Binance. The virus’s versatility allows it to extract important information from a MacBook, including crypto wallet and operating system passwords, which hackers can use to take control of accounts and steal users’ money.
The malware has a number of other features, such as bypassing elements that the operating system manufacturer, Apple, typically uses to enhance security. For example, Cthulhu Stealer can disguise itself and stay under the radar of standard antivirus applications by controlling browser extensions that are used to interact with cryptocurrency exchange services and trade digital assets. Software developers advise MacBook users to be vigilant when downloading third-party applications and to keep their operating system up to date.
Earlier, computer security specialists from Check Point Research reported on a new virus, Styx Stealer, which is aimed at stealing user data, including addresses and passwords for cryptocurrency wallets.
