Cuba announces power cuts in Havana from early August

Cuba’s capital Havana will begin experiencing power cuts from early August, state media reported, as the country’s energy crisis deepens.

Starting in the first week of August, power cuts will be scheduled for four hours a day, from 10 am to 2 pm local time, often every three days, according to the local Communist Party newspaper Tribuna de la Habana, which reported a meeting of local authorities.

The authorities also decided to cancel the city’s carnival parties, which usually take place on weekends in August.

Instead, they will be holding a smaller celebration August 26-28, along with some city-level parties.

Havana has largely been spared the power cuts the island has been experiencing for months amid a worsening economic crisis and fuel shortages.

As explained by the city’s governor, Reinaldo García Zapata, reporting that he would “turn off the municipal circuits”.

“This is the time to show solidarity and help the rest of Cuba to suffer less from unwanted blackouts,” said Havana Communist Party leader Luis Antonio Torres, according to state media.

The energy crisis is of particular concern to government officials following last year’s widespread protests, the biggest since the Cuban revolution, which began after residents tired of the blackouts and took to the streets.
