The Cuban Ministry of Health has increased the number of victims of the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana to 35, while 20 injured are still being treated. According to the Cuban news agency, the fate of “12 or 13 people” is being ignored.
Rescue team investigations have focused on the hotel basement. This is a very dangerous undertaking, the head of the fire brigade stressed, explaining that any displacement of rubble is done carefully in order to avoid a new collapse.
The iconic luxury hotel in central Havana has been closed for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and after a series of works was about to reopen to the public on Tuesday.
As the Ministry of Tourism announced on Saturday, 51 people were working inside the building when the explosion occurred, which is estimated to be due to a leak while the hotel was being refueled by a tanker with liquefied natural gas. The first four floors were badly damaged.
The Saratoga, which has 96 rooms, two restaurants and a rooftop pool, has hosted many celebrities in recent years, from Mick Jagger to Beyoncé and Madonna.
Built in 1880 to house shops, the building was converted into a hotel in 1993. Renovated to become a five star hotel in 2005.
