Cuba cannot get fuel for flights in Argentina and denounces blockade

Cuba's state airline, Cubana de Aviación SA, reported that fuel suppliers in Argentina refused to provide services for its flights authorized in the country and that it had to cancel operations this Tuesday (23) and Wednesday (24).

According to the Cuban state-owned company, the flights were canceled “in light of the abrupt refusal of companies supplying aviation fuel in the Argentine Republic to provide services (…) invoking the provisions of the United States' blockade measures against Cuba.”

In a statement published by the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the company says that the refusal extended to other airlines contracted so that passengers on canceled flights could be transported.

The United States has applied an embargo against Cuba since the Cuban Revolution of 1959, which brought Fidel Castro to power. The measure imposes sanctions on companies that do business with the Cuban government or that purchase products and services from the country.

The Cuban state-owned company has a weekly route with Argentina, a country with which it resumed operations last year, after the interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A CNN , the Argentine Transport Secretariat reported that the aeronautical situation operates normally. She also said that the purchase and sale of fuel is a business issue, but that she will hold a working meeting with an official from the Cuban state airline on Friday (26) to find out about the situation.

A CNN He also contacted the Argentine Foreign Ministry and the Argentine oil company YPF, which has mixed ownership. So far, neither the ministry nor the company have taken a position.
