Five people died Friday morning in Cuba in the crash of a military helicopter between Holguin province and Guantanamo, in the east of the island, announced the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The helicopter “crashed into a hill” and “the five people on board died,” the ministry said in a statement released by state media and read on television news.
“A commission of the Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces is currently investigating the causes of the accident,” said the statement, which gave no further details.
112 dead in a plane crash in 2018
The last serious air crash in Cuba took place in May 2018, when a plane crashed shortly after taking off from Havana airport, killing 112 people, with only one female passenger surviving. An investigation had found errors in the calculations of the weight and “balance” of the aircraft.
Eight Cuban soldiers also died in April 2017 in the crash of a Russian-made plane in the mountainous region of Artemisa (west).
