Cuba formally requests to join BRICS

The Cuban government confirmed last Tuesday (8) that it formally requested entry into the BRICS group, a bloc founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China, and to which Africa later joined.

The director of Bilateral Affairs at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Carlos M. Pereira, reported on his X account that Havana sent a letter to the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to join the group. In 2024, Russia will hold the presidency of the BRICS.

Pereira said that BRICS is consolidating itself as a “key actor in global geopolitics and hope in the region”. The Russian ambassador in Havana, Viktor Coronelli, had announced the news on Sunday (6). “Cuba showed interest in joining the BRICS,” he expressed in statements published by the Russian state agency TASS.

Coronelli also said that the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, received an invitation to participate in the expanded meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, scheduled to take place from October 22 to 24 in Kazan, Russia.

“In our opinion, they are interested in almost all areas of activity of the BRICS group”, indicated the Russian diplomat. “And we will have to wait for the decision on granting association status to see where they will participate more or less actively.”

At the beginning of the year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt formally joined the BRICS group, while other Latin American countries, such as Bolivia, aspire to join the bloc, considered by some of its defenders as an alternative to group of developed countries, known as the G7.
