Three people were injured this morning in a gas explosion in the old town of Havana, just 800 meters from the Saratoga Hotel, which was almost completely destroyed in the same way last Friday.
The injured are a man and his minor son, as well as a neighbor, Yamila Velasquez, a local official, told Cuban public television. “The father of the child turned the switch and there was an explosion. The neighbor injured his legs and arms,” he explained.
This new explosion occurred five days after the, clearly stronger, explosion at the iconic Saratoga Hotel, located in the same neighborhood. According to the latest tally, at least 43 people have been killed and 54 injured.
The three injured were taken to hospital by their neighbors. The fire brigade cut off the gas supply to the district.
“The back of the building and the neighboring house were damaged,” Velasquez said.
At a distance of 800 meters, rescuers are still searching today for the wreckage of Saratoga, which was to reopen yesterday, after being closed for two years due to the pandemic and renovation work. On Friday, while he had not yet received the first visitors, there was a very strong explosion while his tanks were being refueled with gas from a tanker.
