Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are at the Summit of the Americas and I met with them, says Blinken

“Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua are here, I saw them,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, assuring that he met with members of civil society and activists from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua during the Summit of the Americas, held in Los Angeles.

Blinken also says that, in his opinion, members of civil society and various NGOs from these three countries are more representative than the regimes installed in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

“This is a democratic atmosphere, this is what we want to reaffirm at this Summit. People can make decisions about who’s here and who’s not, but virtually every government is represented at the formal meeting, whether it’s heads of state, or in some cases, foreign ministers, like my friend Marcelo Ebrad from Mexico, who will be an active participant in the Summit,” he said.

The absence of invitations to Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, confirmed on Sunday night (5), caused diplomatic instability on the continent.

US officials determined that human rights concerns and a lack of democracy in the three countries, Washington’s main antagonists in Latin America, weighed heavily, a US source said on Sunday.
