Cuban Alejandro Triana Trevez, who was arrested this Thursday morning (18), in the city of Uberaba, in Minas Gerais, knew the American gallerist and his husband. According to the Civil Police, the Cuban and Brent Sikkema met between July and August last year.
Alejandro Triano Trevez is the main suspect of having killed Brent Sikkema, famous for owning an art gallery in New York, USA. The crime took place on Monday (15), in Jardim Botânico, South Zone of Rio. Images from security cameras show that the suspect hung around the house for at least 14 hours before murdering the American.
According to investigations, 18 puncture wounds were found on the victim's body, in the face and chest regions. Around 30 to 40 thousand dollars were taken from the gallery owner's house, but with the killer the police found around 3 thousand.
The police are also investigating the involvement of the American's ex-husband in the crime. The man who is said to be in the process of divorcing the gallery owner is in Cuba and was also born in the Caribbean country. Brent Sikkema was going through a million-dollar fight to get a divorce and be able to see his son again.
Remember the case
Brent Sikkema was found dead on Monday (15) at home. His body had marks from a stab wound, which could have been scissors, a knife or a screwdriver. The examination was carried out and the case is being investigated by the Capital Homicide Police Station.
The American is a partner at Sikkema Jenkins & Co, a famous art gallery in New York. The space was founded by Sikkema in 1991, under the name Wooster Gardens, in reference to its original location, on Wooster Street.
In 1999, the gallery was expanded, moving to its current location on 22nd Street. According to the official website, the venue, which hosts exhibitions of paintings, illustrations, installations, photography and sculptures, has featured names like Kara Walker and Sheila Hicks, as well as up-and-coming photographers including Nikki S. Lee and Deana Lawson.
The United States Consulate in Rio de Janeiro reported that it offers condolences to the family, to whom it is offering the necessary support.
