CUFA and FNA collect 5 million in donations for flood victims in Bahia

The Central Única das Favelas (CUFA) and the National Anti-Racist Front (FNA) raised five million in donations (non-perishable food, water, clothing, hygiene and cleaning materials) to help victims of floods in Bahia.

The rain that hit almost all regions of Bahia in early December 2021 left submerged cities, in total, 153 are still in an emergency situation, according to authorities.

The environmental disaster killed at least 25 people and left 90,000 homeless. The governments of other states declare aid for Bahia.

In images, volunteers from CUFA and FNA recorded the 120,000 baskets sent to more than 150 affected municipalities in Bahia. Volunteers helped with logistics and the loading of trucks that will transport the supplies.

President of Cufa, writer, cultural producer and entrepreneur Preto Zezé, stated that the environmental disaster in Bahia could have happened ‘anywhere’ and, therefore, everyone’s commitment is needed to help those most in need.

“There are more than 470 thousand people impacted by the tragedy. We promptly used our capillarity and credibility to help people who had material losses. Once again, let’s help those in need. The people of Bahia are in need of help, and we are with them”, said the national president of CUFA.

The tragedy in Bahia has mobilized different campaigns to collect donations. Actions accept everything from money transfers to basic items such as food and hygiene products. The NGO Ação da Cidadania sent more than 50 tons of food. “Each basket, for a family of four, guarantees food for at least 20 days”, calculates the NGO.

The OAB of Bahia BA published a list on its website, of other institutions that are receiving donations and transfers of resources via Pix. The CNBB (National Conference of Bishops of Brazil), of the Catholic Church, the network Cáritas Brasileiras carry out the #SOS Bahia campaign.

The initiative also seeks to raise funds for the purchase of clothing, baby diapers, personal hygiene products, protection items against Covid-19, in addition to drinking water and food.
