Cultural issue makes it difficult for men to go to the urologist, says doctor

Data from the Ministry of Health that show that boys go to the urologist 18 times less than girls go to the gynecologist are explained by a cultural issue.

This is the assessment of the urologist and robotic surgeon at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, Fernando Leão.

“We always knew that there is this deficiency, this situation where the man has difficulty looking for the urologist to do the preventive exams, it is a cultural issue”, he said, in an interview with CNN Radio .

The doctor explains that mothers usually pass on to their daughters this culture of going to the gynecologist when the girl menstruates for the first time, to “understand this hormonal process.”

“The man does not have this milestone and goes unnoticed, the man has no instinct for sexual orientation, he thinks he can solve it alone.”

The ideal, according to Fernando Leão, is for parents to take their children to the urologist from the age of 15, during puberty.

“Going to a professional can anticipate events, early diagnosis allows the patient to be successful in treating diseases”, he said.

Among these diseases are prostate cancer, varicocele (which causes infertility) and even urinary stones.
