Cup, external or internal absorbent pad or cloth: which is the most suitable?

The choice of method to deal with menstruation It goes beyond simple preference: it involves individual considerations about hygiene, comfort and practicality.

With so many options available — like external and internal pads, menstrual cups, absorbent panties and reusable cloths — It is common to have doubts about which one is most suitable for each situation. But, after all, which one offers the best protection and security?

“Menstruation is the monthly shedding of the inner part of the uterus, called the endometrium,” explains Marcia Fuzaro Terra Cardial, gynecologist and professor at FMABC and vice-president of CNE Febrasgo.

This process is regulated by ovarian hormones and usually occurs 14 days after ovulation. The menstrual cycle, on average, varies from 25 to 32 days and lasts between four and seven days, although there may be individual variations.

In addition to choosing the most comfortable method, it is essential to consider factors such as menstrual flow, physical activity, and how often each product needs to be changed. Below, we present a comparison between the main options, focusing on hygiene and comfort.

Menstrual cup: hygiene and practicality

The menstrual cup is one of the most hygienic alternatives, as it is made of medical silicone and, when properly cleaned, has a low risk of infection. “It should be emptied every 6 to 12 hours, depending on the flow, and sterilized before and after use,” says Cardial. It is also recommended for women with heavy flow, due to its greater retention capacity.

However, the cup may cause discomfort for some women during insertion and removal, especially at the beginning of use. It is a good option for those looking for practicality, but it is important to pay attention to proper hygiene to avoid complications.

External absorbent pad: risk of irritation

External pads are one of the most popular options because they are easy to use and change. However, as Lorenna Belladonna, a gynecologist at the Niterói Hospital Complex in Rio de Janeiro, warns, “because they are in direct contact with the external genital area, they can increase the risk of bacterial proliferation and undesirable odors, especially if they are not changed regularly.” The recommendation is to change the pad every four to six hours, depending on the flow.

This option may be more comfortable for some women, but for those with sensitive skin or who are prone to irritation, it is best to opt for soft-lined or unscented cotton pads.

Tampons: discretion and need for attention

The internal absorbent, also known as a tampon, is discreet and allows greater freedom of movement, making it ideal for physical activities. However, prolonged use without changing it increases the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but serious condition characterized by a set of symptoms caused by bacterial toxins.

“The change should be done every four to eight hours to avoid infections and ensure safety,” advises Belladonna.

Absorbent panties: comfort and sustainability

Absorbent panties are a comfortable and reusable option, practical for everyday use, as they do not require frequent changes.

However, it needs to be washed properly after each use to prevent the proliferation of bacteria. Models with greater absorption capacity are recommended for those with heavy flow.

Reusable cloth: ecological alternative

The cloth, or cloth pad, is an ecological and economical choice, but requires rigorous hygiene care. “It must be washed daily and dried thoroughly to avoid the accumulation of bacteria,” warns Cardial.

Although comfortable for some women, it may not be so practical, especially outside the home.

Risks and precautions

Regular changing of the pads is essential to avoid irritation and infections. Sleeping without protection is not recommended during your period, especially for those with moderate to heavy flow.

“Choosing the right option for each need, such as night pads or absorbent panties, guarantees comfort and safety,” suggests Belladonna.

Each woman must find the method that best suits her body and lifestyle, always considering hygiene and safety.
